I
don’t hate Scottish MPs on a personal basis, although Gordon Brown is very difficult to like - he doesn’t have
good social skills, can’t smile properly and he’s grumpy with a short fuse. I reckon he’s a really decent
chap who works bloody hard, but should’ve made history as a well respected Chancellor, rather than being remembered
as one of the least popular Prime Ministers of modern times.
I hate Scottish MPs as a group, because they dominate Westminster and English politics
even though there is a Scottish parliament for Scottish people. How can you be Scottish and represent Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath
and be the Prime Minister based
in London? This may sound like a rascist comment, but it really isn’t meant to be. In fact a huge part of me wishes
we could all stick together and stay as the UK, and not its constituent 'home nations'. We have an outlook, humour,
beautiful countryside, coastline and a history (for better or worse) that we all share. The only exception of course is sport
where I am a firm supporter of England. It is essential not to be beaten by a celtic team, and vice versa. The
only worse fate is to be beaten by France.
Sport aside though, I still don't get
how Scottish and Welsh MPs can sit to determine English laws and taxes and insist on their own governments with their own
MPs. For example, Scottish and Welsh MPs voted on student top-up fees for England, even though it didn’t affect them
because they have their own version. Why isn’t there an English parliament that just decides
on English stuff, and then all the home nations get together when UK-wide issues need to be debated or legislated?

Another example - Douglas
Alexander is the International Development Secretary, sits in the Cabinet and is MP for Paisley and represents that community.
That bit is easy to understand, but there is also a Scottish Parliament Member for Paisley. So what do they both do for the
good people of Paisley that is different, and why do we pay for a Scottish Parliament member to sit in Edinburgh and a Scottish
MP to sit in London, when they both represent one constituency? Confused? You should be. Oh,
and I forgot to mention that the Scottish Parliament member for Paisley is Wendy Alexander, she’s the Leader of the
Labour Party in Scotland and the big sister of . . . Douglas Alexander the Scottish MP for Paisley. Nice to keep taxpayers’ money in the family.
The Prime Minister is from Kirkcaldy
and is the guy in charge, but if you really wanted to run England from Scotland you’d make sure you had control of the
money (spending and taxes) and the military (guns and bombs). It follows then, that the person that holds the purse strings is Alastair Darling (MP for Edinburgh
South West) and the Defence Secretary is Des Browne (MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun).
Obviously
I don't mind that they come from Scotland as such and nor should anybody else, but the fact that Scotland runs England,
makes its laws, collects its taxes, has its fingers on the triggers but runs its own parliament as well, is complete madness.
The Celts have finally subjugated the English after all these years in a bloodless coup - Mel Gibson (William Wallace) could never have dared dream that
a blue face and no undies would eventually get you this far.
